SwingArm Buddy!
This was in the "Bionic leg" thread, 2nd page, about 1/2 way down. They sell them at rocky mnt atv, Probably other places also.
[quote="DoctorXRR"]The chain adjusting bolts snapped off in the swingarm, due to corrosion on the threads.
All I can say is thank goodness for the SwingArm Buddy!
The most difficult (and most important) part of the procedure is drilling out the broken bolts. You have to work your way up to with two smaller diameter drill bits before using the 3/8" bit provided in the kit. At least one of the smaller bits needs to be extra-long, otherwise your it will not clear the swingarm and you will drill crooked. Also critical, is making a very deep center punch mark - in the center of the broken bolt. I hit the center punch several times to be sure to get a deep punch mark. The finished 3/8" hole must be centered in the swingarm... not a procedure for the squeamish!

The kit makes a very solid repair and I applied anti-seize to the new adjusting bolts. The only down-side to the kit, is the new bolts are 5/16" american, which means you have to use a 1/2 wrench to adjust your chain, which may mean having to pack an extra wrench in your tool kit, although you might still get away with using a 13mm metric.

The steel insert is slightly over-sized compared to the 3/8" drill bit, so it is a good press fit into the swingarm.

Frosty,

yer going to buy a new swinger because of a bolt stuck in your one???
Ya you should, and I'll pay the postage to send that old useless swinger over to me!

Serious, you haven't have you? Just drill it out or have it drilled out, but 'out' it will.

If he rides to my house I will let him sit there and drink my tea/coffee while I fix it for free.

I have spoke to Paul from manchester , http://www.xr650r.co.uk/ , i am going to attempt the repair , if i damage the swinger beyond repair he will sort replacement for me for a good price .
The way its broken , i have about half an inch of it sticking out , going to weld nut on it and try to get it out again , i hope that the heat from the welding proces will release the bugger .

Seriously, I hope you don't - but, as seriously, I will take it gladly!!!
I'll have it machined out, welded-up and re-drilled, would be darn nice to have a spare unit here.

I have filled the repaired swing arm with polyurethane  foam  to prevent any moisture entering + to stop the rattle from the broke screw  , and most importantly loads and loads of grease on the brand new adjuster bolts BRP smile

have to say here that easy-outs do work really well BUT you have to have good quality ones (http://store.snapon.com/Multi-Spline-Extractors-Extractor-Multi-Spline-1-8--P635483.aspx) and it takes a bit of good judgement to drill deep enough that the extractor can bite and screw in a bit to really grip but not to deep that you drill all the way through....

I have had a pair of these 1/8 snapon (fits the common size screw for aircraft inspection panels) ones for about 10 years, use them fairly regularly and haven't broken one yet!!!

Cheers

Actualy they would snap too , dont get me wrong i love snapon tools , they are the doggies nuts but did not work on my COMPLETELY seized barsterd , as the heating it up and freezing failed too , the last option was drilling it out and retap the hole mad as heck
