Radiator Fan Install

I was reading some threads on ADVrider the other day and came across another radiator fan discussion. "4play" had found a fan on ebay shipped to the door for under $30 bucks. After checking it out I pulled the trigger while it was still on sale. Here's a link to the seller on ebay - Click Here. Unfortunately the sale is over...But still a good buy!

Turns out it's the same fan (Spal 4" Pull) used in the KTM's but without the rectangle shroud . Oh well...I decided that some air was better than no air. After checking out the mounting possibilities and what it would take to fab a custom shroud I decided to mount the fan in KLR fashion.

The holes on the fan line up almost perfectly with the XR's emissions tabs. I had to cut a little bit of plastic near the fans mounting holes so the XR tabs would line up right over the fan holes. I cut the bottom ears off the rad tabs and bent them away from the radiator slightly. This gave just enough room to squeeze the fan into position. I used some self tapping screws to cut threads into fans plastic.


I fashioned a mounting bracket from some aluminum and used a sealed pre-wired toggle switch with a rubber boot. The power is straight off the itty bitty battery. This will allow me to shut the bike down but still be able to run the fan if necessary.


My intentions aren't to run the fan unless I deem it necessary...ie - sitting at stop lights this summer when the temp off the asphalt is registering over 100F <-- Sunburn.

Me likes....but how much is a radiator fan needed? Does the BRP really overheat that much? Is it stop-and-go traffic or general use?

Since the XRR wasn't designed to be a dual sport trail bike but rather for 90 MPH through the desert it makes sense that it wouldn't come with a fan. But as Hodakaguy once said all other DS bikes seem to have them...Why not!

How about running Evans NPG+ or NPG-R Coolant?

Correction ...I use Engine Ice.
I've never had overheating issues but haven't had the bike out in 100F weather yet.

I know some guys who ride their BRPs in Summer here and the temps are regularly around 120. No problems if they have Evans.

so hows the fan holding up? and how's it working?

i did build one on my piggie real cheap

i only used a 120mm computer fan (5dollar???) and i can see on my vapor it workes great when im infront of a stoplight or doing some slow riding

and made a power on/off switch (7dollar) on my dashboard and thats all

How long will it last with water crossings and getting wet? Just curious is all.

i never ride in the rain and when that is gonna happen one day i wont put power on it (it got a fuse also)

when i find an original fan im gonna put that up but until now this fan workes fine for more then a year now.

I don't think there are many better options than the proven KTM fan. Honda has a fan. I held one the Honda Japan mailed to Bruce Ogilvie just for the XR650R but I couldn't tell what it came off of.

Did you get that odometer to make it street legal? where did you get it from? I have to start working on my stuff to get it done over next winter.

any pics of the signals? I would like nice low profile tiny ones.

i baught my piggy street legal (original enduro style) with the original odo meter but i made the bike a supermotard now so i added the vapor (e-bay) with the selfmade dashboard and added small blinkers.

it was like this:

Sorry guys just brought the 1 on ebay, only brought the fan & cowl will let you know what it's like when it gets here. Need to work out where it was originally wired into, cannot see honda having a "make do" switch.

Ricko's link now steers to a RH-radiator ofF - allegedly - an XR650R........ but it is the first one I've seen with 4 tabs on. My, removed of course, anti-smog rubbish was mounted using 3 tabs only, no idea what bike this rad is off??

Also, as far as I know did Honda not bring a version out with a fan as std equipment, hence there simply is not 'std' fan - which means you'll have to make your own switching circuit, either manually or thermostatically. I'm busy with the latter, waiting for a machined thermoswitch-housing.

but the bike still looks like that today and i dont ride that much , vew days ago i did my first oil change after 1350km (838 miles) and i got the bike since march 2009



i also never seen 4 tabs on the radiator, i got 3.

Hey no problems Burp. will post up loads of pictures etc, only brought it as a project my bike never gets hot enough to need cooling and the UK isn't a hot place lol.
My rad only has 3 tabs and I think it's a retro fit from another bike but only paid £25 delivered so worth the gamble, I am planning on adding a thermostat switch to make it work if I ever fit it .
Might be here tomorrow you never know, the cowl looks like it will catch the rad sheild ? but the picture has gone now so cannot show you....doh.

I've got an in-line aluminium adapter made/turned to accept a thermoswitch (automotive) which will be able to switch the current direct, ie no relay needed.
It's a similar thing to the temp-sensor housing the Vapor comes with, I'm sure you've seen it (or got it?), and I'll mount it in the top-waterline to the RH rad. A fuse will do the rest, no hassles. Me getting it, plus anodizing & mounting it will take a while, but I'll post a piccie here when it's on.
You could do same I suppose, with your friend who's got a machine shop? I could get you the number of the switch I'll use, around 100degC On & 95C Off (ie a built-in hysteresis which you want) which I think is close to perfect for our bikes. The Americans tend to use a waaaaay 'cooler' switch, coming On in the very low 80'sC which must mean the fan's On for too much/long as this is the thermostat's opening temp.

Also, for mounting the Spal (no cowling!) I've got a dxf-file for lasercutting, it's a perfect fit & strong too.
And, for my big 27l IMS tank (no space for the Spal left!!) I've got brackets coming to mount dual (LHS also) computer fans - which move little air compared to the Spal but at least it'll be better than nothing.

All doom guys, the fan and cowl arrived today but sadly they are of a DRZ400, seller appologises and they have been sent back today .

was it to big for the xrr to fit?
