Auto decompressor

Post  appleseed on Tue Jun 07, 2016 7:56 pm

Hi all,

The past couple of rides I found my piggie has developed a tenancy to stall when left idling. She also started backfiring when changing up through the gears, particularly when rolling off the throttle when changing  up.

The stalling while idling sounds like its coughing and maybe causing the auto decompression mechanism on the cam to kicking.

Does anyone know if the auto decompression thing wears out or binding (or something else) and be causing this.

fyi my piggie has about 20000 km's on it and in general still runs well. I last checked valve clearances at the last oil change 600 kms ago.

thanks

It's worth checking that the decomp cable is not too tight especially at full lock. If it is it might need rerouting. With the tank off you can see when it starts to move as you operate the lever.
With the tank off is also worth checking that none of the elecric cables are shorting out either here or infront of the steering head. This could cause backfiring but so could a split in the carb rubber allowing air in.
Good luck in finding the problem.

I had already checked the manual decompression cable and it isn't engaging so it's not that. Ill check the wiring and for air leaks next.

The ADsystem may - a remote may! - get icky if mineral oil is used for too long periods ie when forming deposits. A pure synth will at least help cleaning this, and Agip's St2000 is a famous oil for cleaning Honda Civic scraper rings when their odo goes over 70KKm.
Other than that I'd look elsewhere, when running the ADsyst isn't a problem at all, as said the cable may be.
IF it is though you should hear it, a ticking noise?
Also, you know Murphy don't you? Re-check the valve clearance bru, 10 to 1 there's a lil' forkup there - like Mauser drink TEA when working on yer pig, not some heavy dark ale BRP smile Bump

tequila is my "tea" of choice, as whitblits can make you blind [and] drunk  Shocked

I am 100% sure the manual decomp cable is not binding as I have had to re-route it as I have bar rises.

I run semi-synth motul 5000 10w40 and was planning on switching to fully synth but still have 4 liters of the semi-synth to burn through.

Generally the bike idles fine it just sometimes farts and dies, I have ordered an new carb insulator/rubber boot in case its leaking so will double check the valve clearances when I change the insulator.
