Here is an awesome post I found on ADVrider that explains stators... It's complicated, but worth a read if you are thinking about rewinding your own stator.

Stator has 17 poles

My BRP was purchased with no info on stator so I pulled the stator off and it has 17 pole sixteen a wound does anyone know who's stator this might be. I am upgrading my lighting and would like a little more info? its a 2001 with a bd kit on it.

I have one too in a box somewhere. I think it's from Electrosport in Oceanside.
