Many thanks lads - the same chain (albeit 520 not 525) as on my SE Smile

I should have known Smile

Interesting how you search on the same seller, and the exact same chain is worth up to £35 more just for a newer/late model bike...  deal

So why would you wrap tape around the (UK spec) rear metal subframe that is under the rear guard? I wondered about this for a while.

hello from Surrey

Post  binned_it on Sat Feb 08, 2014 8:01 pm

Hi,

Found this thread, thought I'd say hi, and thanks for the pic of the clutch tool, which I'm copying!

I'm currently rebuilding a 2000 XR for an overland trip too, and not to far away from you by the looks of it. My XR top-end refresh has become a full nut and bolt rebuild, new gearbox, RHS crank case and more. Long story.

Pics of some of my woes...

I think mine must have had the same problem, except rather than cover it with tape, they cut it off flush with the cross member bit.

I had been wondering why, you may have found the answer.
But it should be an easy bit of fab: simple part.

£208 part from Honda.

Godalming, nr. Guildford.
Yes, most of the known XR issues, plus a previous owner somehow broke the engine casing around the kick start stop, and had it badly welded, the weld fell off and found its way into the gearbox.

I found a RHS crank case in the states for reasonable money, and a low mileage gearbox in the UK, cheaper than the parts from Honda, so just need to find time for the rebuild.

Obviously there's project creep too: BRP triple clamps with Scott damper, various XRs only bits, bigger disk, bash plate, HDB guards with mirrors and top clamp, etc...

Ah, so there were tabs there for the indicators? Never thought of that... Smile

Didn't get much done today, started cleaning the filthy subframe and have a nice new rear fender to put on.

Old

Shiny new Smile (to me - is second hand but nice condition). Plus a nice new LED tail-light, as my old one was bodged and fell off somewhere in the Sahara!

I just bought a new UFO rear fender. Not impressed, the colour is swirley, like it wasn't mixed properly when it was injected. Think I'll send it back.

I imported mine from the US, even with import taxes it worked out £30 cheaper than over here....grrrr rip off Britain.

From this:

To this (undercoat on):

Nice weld (both sides)

While I was at it (borrowing my mates sand-blaster I mean!) I cleaned up the headers Smile Tomorrow a coat of high temp paint.
