Newbie in Sin city

Post  808redrider on Sun Feb 03, 2013 4:43 pm

Greetings from Las Vegas.
Just picked up a 2000 model, appears in okay condition for a 13 year old bike.
Noticed a few on craigslist and also on this bike but are they known to throw chains?
the tabs for the cs sprocket guard were broken off, otherwise looking forward to exploring more
NV trails.

Hi and welcome,

I'm a relative newbie to BRP's too but not seen anything about throwing chains before. Are they broken off or cut off?

The reason for the chain snapping is Lack of servicing , and yes its pretty common ,Solution is to keep the chain lubed and clean , when worn change it for a new one ( good chain cost nearly 100 $ but snapped chain can cost you loads more $$$ in repair bill ) .
Change the oil regulary , clean and oil the airfilter and enjoy the ride .

roger, thanks for the tips!

They're snapped off with only nubs exposed with only a few threads remaining.
Supersprox and an o-ring chain on the shopping list, and inspect clutch bearing.

cheers cheers

I've found the XR to be good on chains but always make sure that I fit a DID X ring or equivalent and change it as soon as it becomes obviously worn.
There is a lot of cheap Chinese made rubbish about at the moment, there may also be some good cheap Chinese chain but I am not prepared to take the chance.
Would hate the chain to snap and to be stuck in the middle of nowhere especially if it had smashed the engine casing.

808,

XRsOnly have a case saver which probably still will fit as they use other boltholes also. This thing may well save you hassles & cost whenever it 'throws' a chain, and it is good safety measure to have. Looks nice too, order the one for the correct size c/sprocket as they leave just-enough clearing.
