Mikuni TM 40 pumper / Edelbrock

Post  madkate on Thu Jul 12, 2012 10:22 am

Wasted $300 on the standard carb new diaphragm, in & out of the bike shop more than once but still stalls out & wont idle. Was all set to buy the mikuni but after reading a couple of posts am not sure. Stock bike 50/50 road bush. Appreciate all opinions.

take it to a different shop... beat head
or look at it yourself - they are really a very simple carb despite the number of hoses hanging off it!

Kate,

on the lhs the (std) carb has a small cover behind which a membrane lives.
The cover has a tiny bore in it which must be plugged with either epoxy or silicone.
Thus modified no leaning off on overrun happens, may result in less popping also.
Do this, but.... also check if the membrane is in good nick, not leaking or why. If it leaks your idling will be affected (it prolly won't), and likely it will affect the running all over the band.

Edelbrock, already for some time, makes no Pig-carbs anymore neither spares, they are unobtanium these days. That leaves you (for a pumper) with 2 choices, the Mikuni TM40 and the (forgot, insert name here, CHF or something, commonly found on new 450's). The TM40 can be bought as a drop-in fit, plug & play, whilst the other you'll have to make fit, possibly also dent the tank due to space needed for the throttle mechanism (height). Add that there's a wealth of jetting info on the TM40 and a ditto scarcity for the other, and conclude with me there's only 1 choice - which laso happens to be the best in my opinion. Yeah, got one too, never looked back. Dead-simple to jet, simple carb, sterling choice.

No worries, what's in a name, or for that matter an avatar?
I sent you a PM there, want to see
a) if that works you being a newbie there (same like seller)
b) if you can reply to it, but if not there's an eddress in so you can bounce something back

This looks to me like a new carb - so, if you'll get it my first priority would be to scrounge the net for spares, stock up on them is my advice, rather too many than 1 too few.

Shit, that was by minutes then, he PM'ed me he still had it.
Anyway, I'd ask on that other forum (new PM there), way more yankees than here - and keep in mind the Edelbrock was never marketed outside of the US, I'd say your chances are zero to find one in Europe.
Goodluck!

Oh fark, here's what I would do in your case:
Contact Waterfall, offer more for it PLUS mention you'll also offer same to the guy who bought it, then ask for the guy's contact details. Some chaps are suckers for easy money, after all you have the 'No' already, try turn it into a Yes?

That would be too much money. If that were the case I would go something like the FCR but would hve to pay for a few hours to tune the carb on a dyno.

Thank you for the heads up. I looked at his auction site and notice that he does not ship international.
To confirm this I sent him a message and asked him if the throttle housing and cables came with the carb and if he would ship it to the USA. We will see what he says in reply to the international shipping.

Thx,

Bob
