Los Angeles XR rider

Post  blone on Fri Nov 26, 2010 7:31 pm

Hey guys, 650R owner from LA here. I've also got a wr444 SM and it is too much fun, so I am seriously considering converting my 650R to a SuMo! I plan to keep the stock wheels/knobbies to swap over for desert riding as well. 2 thumbs

Rob Barnum built suspension set up for baja, Edelbrock pumper carb, Pro Taper CR high bend bars, scotts/ohlins steering damper, Scotts upper billet triple clamp, Ironman sprockets, XR's only footpegs, XR's only case guard, FMF Q2 pipe.

Gratuitous bike pic..

Nice, thanks for the link! I've seen the 650R's converted to CRF bodywork and I cannot stop drooling over them!

CRF Bodywork

Post  Bump on Sun Nov 28, 2010 12:37 am

I think their CRF conversion of the shrouds requires the aluminum tank some guy in Italy used to make. The CRF rear fender was done a couple of ways I think I recall him saying. One was to splurge and spend for the CF guy's fender from France. The other involved the base of the XRR rear fender and the exposed area of the CRF rear fender plus a lot of plastic welding and stainless fasteners.
I wish Ogilvie had asked for and gotten updated fenders.

Nice looking bike! Let's see more pics!

I'm in the LA area too, and just picked up another (had one a couple years ago) XR650R. Very similarly equipped to yours... I'll take some decent pics when I get my front wheel fixed...

Thanks! A little more pig porn as requested. I just got a plate for it!! Pretty stoked on that.

This was when I first got it. The bike was given to me by my brother, it needed a little tlc.

Here it is now.. New shrouds, and graphics. Also, I trimmed down the front banana fender a bit, came out pretty nice.

I need to get some better pics of it, soon enough!

How did you do that fender? Did you use a paper template or just wing it? Can you take a photo of the fender from above? Do you have before and after photos?

I pretty much winged it. I used a pair of tin snips, then sanded it smooth.

Here's a pic of the fender from the top I took as per your request, I think I cut about 3" of of it, but I am not 100% sure. I also trimmed about an inch off of the back of the fender as well. This fender is scratched up, so I'm gonna get a new stock fender and do the same thing, or just get a supermoto fender when I convert it. I don't have any before/after photos aside from the before photo of bike I posted. Hope this helps.

It does help. And I really appreciate the effort. Nicely done Sir. Do you know any of the other XRR guys in LA like Gene or Soto?

Thanks for the compliment!

The only other XRR rider I know rides a motard, and I've only ridden with him once in the Malibu canyons, his name escapes me right now, but he lives in Venice. Bitchin' bike.

On another note, I just hooked up an LED brake/taillight! She's pretty much street legal now! 2 thumbs

Those are some very tall risers. Where did you get extend length control cables (throtle, decom, clutch)?

Motion Pro offers ALL longer cables for the XRR. I should be getting my extended cables from them any day now. 5" over throttle cables and 3" over decomp and clutch cables...

Ya, my brother and I are both 6'4, so the risers are nice for us tall guys!

I'm not sure where the cables came from, I can ask my brother if he knows, looks like Garthe has your answer though.

I'm using what Garthe recommends

Post  Bump on Sun Dec 12, 2010 5:56 pm

IO think that is what Jim at BRP Moto packages and recommends with the 1X setup.

Where did you order the big risers?? I am 6'5" and I can't seem to find anything that is anywhere close to that height. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure Rob Barnum installed the risers along with the damper/upper triple clamps when he did the suspension, this was when my brother owned the bike and had it setup for Baja by him, so I am not sure where Barnum got them, they probably came with the upper triple clamps. Maybe someone else can chime in on where to get them.

The risers in the pic look like Scott risers, which can be purchased from Hardracing.
Goto http://www.hardracing.com/DIRT&ATV/DIRT%20Shocks%20&%20Steering%20Damp/SCOTTSMAIN.htm and click on 'Damper Photos', click Honda, and then click on the 4th entry from top for the XR650R.
I got these too, however in titanium colour. Nice & high, and this kit comes with longer throttle cables too.
You'll definitely need longer clutch & decomp cables also for a best fit, so I've ordered a set 3" longer (same like the supplied throttle one's).

from Jim at BRPMoto. I mean everything too from the 1X triple setup, the underbar damper, cables, fasteners, everything. I'm 6'4" and the cockpit feels great.

owner is a great guy too

Post  Bump on Fri Dec 17, 2010 9:29 pm

Jim Rios is the owner of BRP and is a super guy. He recently moved from LA to Colorado. In any case he is the man on this stuff. When team Honda needs one-off $6K triple tree setups Jim is where they go.
