Works great. Only challenge is keeping the rod from getting bent. I use a PVC tube for storage. Although, any long rod will work. Most hardware stores will have a section somewhere they sell small rod stock square and round and then you just lay it against the sprocket as far across as possible and then run it at an angle up to the chain far forward. That said, I like that this style doesn't require three hands. me not being evolved that far and all...
