Engine dies when choke is closed

Post  kashmir on Thu May 27, 2010 8:59 am

Im having problems with choke. When I clsoe the choke the engine dies. I cleaned out the carb, what are some other reasons why its doing this?

Is this at idle with the engine at operating temperature?

If so, your running to rich.

Couple of things to check:
- pilot jet: clogged? Sounds like it, and it's the smallest jet hence most likely to clog first.
- idle-screws still in their correct position? Mixture & slide screws I mean.
- if you haven't closed-up the small bore to the membrane-valve (LHS of carb, under 4 screws) it may be that this membrane is torn/broken or that some other fault here is to blame. Fix it by putting a small drop of epoxy-glue in the bore of the cover.
- the carb2rubber connection (on the head-side) is leaking. Go outside (duh!), start it up on choke, and with a gas-burner (OFF, no flame!) blow gas around this connection. If the rev's rise there's a leak somewhere here.
Oh, 1 other point..... there's enough gas is there??
